After 7 months of travelling, I'm taking a 3 week holiday from it all with my parents in Ecuador ...many of you will now close this page in disgust! Yes, I'm still in South America exploring the country, but having your parents on board requires a few adjustments and a bit more planning.
As soon as I knew they were coming I spent a lot of time searching out 'parent friendly' accomodation, activities and travel arrangements. Long distance buses were out. Staying anywhere 'too basic' (read hostel!) was out. As were backpacks and changing location every 3 days ... so, really it was necessary to come off the backpacker trail and get into family holiday mode with a good balance of relaxation, activities, food and alcohol!
Ecuador was chosen as the place to meet me for a number of reasons; they wanted to see Quito and it's old colonial town, they could get out and explore different types of countryside from volcanoes and mountains to islands and beaches, June is the beginning of the whale breeding season on the coast and finally Colombia still sounds too frightening for them!
So, after a few months planning, they have arrived. It's lovely to have them here having not seen them for 7 months and after the all the dancing in Cali it's the perfect opportunity for the blisters on my feet to heal! And, what's more, is that they come bearing gifts ... new underwear to replace the casualties of backpacker laundries (either you never see it again, it comes back a different size or it gets baked in a tumble drier and quickly disintegrates!) some new clothes just in case I was getting bored of what I have with me ... bored?! I can't stand the site of the contents of my bag and look forward to never wearing it again... so a few new T shirts are warmly welcomed!
Let the family holiday commence!
