When the Wildlife gets too close ...

One evening we decided to indulge in our love of sea food once more and went to the neighbouring fishing village for the catch of the day.

As we were being shown to our table my dad and I clocked a large, brown, scuttling insect run across the floor ... not wanting to freak my mother out we exchanged knowing glances and said nothing.  This is a huge improvement for me ... I hate things that scuttle, they make my skin crawl!  But I am getting better and not flying into hysterics every time I see them now and to be honest South America hasn't been too bad for creepy crawlies ... until now...

We were perusing the menu when we were BOMBARDED by these ...

They're crickets.  Completely harmless but when they fly into your hair or you feel the weight of them land on your shoulder or they land on your hand as you go to sip your beer you don't react rationally.

At the time we did not know they were crickets and as we were leaping out of our seats every 30 seconds we didn't care what they were as long as they didn't get inside our clothes!

As the crazy gringos jumped and squealed the other tables in the restaurant cried with laughter.  They even took pictures!  At one stage all the staff in the restaurant surrounded our table trying to stop the onslaught of the bouncing beasts.

It's fair to say I've never eaten a meal faster in my life, nor given a faster reply when asked if we would like desert or coffee once we had finished.  We were wrecked by the end of the meal, we twitched and jumped at the shadows and had to be taken back to the hotel immediatley by a very aplogetic restaurant owner.  Needless to say we didn't go out for dinner again after that!  A shame as the food was amazing, but none of us could take that kind of excitement again!
