Rio Rocks!!

After all the relaxation in Petropolis and Ihla Grande it was time to hit the amazing city of Rio de Janeiro and what a city it is!  Great beaches, samba beats and caiprinhas - the perfect combination.

We stayed in Santa Theresa, a small bohemian town on top of a hill with some excellent views of Rio.  We found another amazing hostel, Terra Brasilis, with the best views of all ...  a lot of time was spent drinking coffee and gazing across the city.  Yep, it's a tough life!

Santa Theresa was a great place to stay, full of cool bars, cafes which stay open all night and cute places to eat, a roll down the hill to Lapa for the weekend street parties and some excellent street art.  It was great to be back in a city with real creativity.

The rest of Rio's sights lived up to the hype; sunset on top of Sugar Loaf Mountain, seeing Christo whenever you look to the sky line, the beaches and the beautiful people.

Sunset on Ipanema Beach - all cities should be on beaches!

We even got into the full swing of Brazilian life and went to watch the football!   The most popular team, Flamengo, were playing so we saw the Brazilian football fans at there best.  Watching the fans support their team was more of a performance than the game itself.  There was continuous singing, dancing, samba drumming and enormous flags flying.  You see, hear and feel the passion from the fans and get sucked into the spirit of the game.  An amazing spectacle.

Now, there aren't as many pics of Rio as I'd like because Rio has a bit of a reputation for petty theft and having had my bag taken once, I wasn't going to risk my camera as well!  The other problem was that my camera charger was in the bag that was taken and finding a replacement took some time!  So, for night's out, we went old school ... we bought a disposible camera; it was like visiting 1995 - so watch this space for when they get developed!
